The most important issue for people living in the vicinity of U.S. military bases in Okinawa is public safety. The U.S. military insists that safety measures are sufficient, but very few Japanese citizens who live under the flight paths of U.S. planes and helicopters feel reassured. Are military helicopters really safe? Can future accidents really be prevented? Is safety really a non-issue as the U.S. military brass claim? In this section we examine the issue of public safety, and separate fact from fallacy.
